Meeting Schedule:

  8:30 - 9:00 Registration

  9:00 - 10:15 DB2 Performance - A Primer
Bill Arledge, Principal Consultant, CA Technologies

DB2 performance is a broad topic that can focus on system and/or application performance, depending on the role of the interested party. A z/OS performance management specialist wants a high-level DB2 performance perspective while a production DBA will depend on a more detailed application-level view. Finally, an application DBA or DB2 developer may focus on SQL and object access to tune applications. And of course, some DBAs do it all. This session provides a DB2 performance management overview, discussing performance data sources, key metrics, and techniques used to optimize DB2 performance. We’ll briefly discuss the types of tools that are used to manage DB2 performance.

  10:15 - 10:30 Coffee Break

10:30 - 11:45 Database Performance Discoveries and Recommendations
Dave Beulke, Dave Beulke & Associates

Is your database application experiencing poor response time, scalability problems, and too many deadlocks or poor application performance? One or a combination of zParms, database design and application coding techniques can cause these performance issues.

There are many new DB2 9 and DB2 10 techniques, system parameters, database design, and application coding methods to avoid problems and revitalized your older databases' performance. This presentation will take you through the discoveries found during recent performance reviews and you will learn about the latest recommendations for fixing your database and application performance problems.

  11:45 - 12:45 Lunch
Optional product-specific lunch presentation Introduction to CA's Chorus DB2 DBA Role, a new CA Technologies product (presented by Bill Arledge, Principal Consultant, CA Technologies)

  12:45 - 2:00 DB2 Dynamic Statement Cache in a Nutshell
Bill Arledge, Principal Consultant, CA Technologies

Dynamic SQL is a significant portion of the DB2 workload at many large shops around the world. Dynamic SQL presents inherent performance management challenges and the dynamic statement cache can help mitigate these performance issues. This technical session will review dynamic SQL implementation, including dynamic SQL coding techniques and DB2 bind options that will ensure optimal statement cache usage. We’ll review details on the dynamic statement cache, including monitoring performance of dynamic SQL using cache statistics. Finally, we’ll review DB2 10 enhancements that improve dynamic statement cache utilization.

  2:00 - 2:15 Break

  2:15 - 3:30 Real Time Statistics
  Svetlana Kacapor, Geico

This presentation will provide a short overview of RTS in DB2 V8 and V9 with examples of using RTS for REORG and RUNSTATS utilities. It will focus on researching the use of indexes and monitoring for object growth.
